I live on campus in a residence hall, and they’ve got really strict rules on file sharing and they can take away your internet or computer if you violate them, but i’m not sure whether or not rapidshare/megaupload are legal.

Yes it is, regardless of the site or program being used you are still sharing files.
If its copyrighted and you download it without paying, its illegal.
yep, illegal
i don’t know but limewire is definitely illegal.
yep, but i doubt theyll do anything about you downloading music. just to be sure though, you can always put it in a folder, then make that folder hidden, then set it so that hidden folders are not automatically shown
if you are getting songs/ movies for free then yes it is illegal.
they are illegal if they are files that are being downloaded arent free . meaning that the producer of that file gives you sole consent ! baiscallly if you download music from that site lets say for linkin park you have to get there consent to download that file !if you dont its illegal
It isn’t illegal so long as the material in question isn’t copyrighted or you own a hard copy of the material (Such as DVD or CD).
Yes it is illegal……bcoz u r not paying money and u r downloading all the files.
The Megashare and Rapidshare the file upload and download servers like youtube which gives a link and u can download it anywere in the world.
My guess is that you already knew that downloading any form of music without purchase is illegal, but your real question is if you can get caught by downloading from megaupload/rapidshare
Since youre not uploading to any other users and it is a direct download it would be very difficult for the school to know what you are downloading. On the other hand, if you were getting music from bittorrent or p2p network it would be easier for the school to find out based on the traffic generated from uploads as well as connections to other users.
So you dont have much to worry about if you download content from upload sites.
Well techcally Rapidshare and Megaupload offer a service to upload files. That in itself is not illegal of course.
However, the vast majority of files placed there are subject to copyright and therefore sharing or downloading them are illegal yes.
If your campus is strict about this kind of thing, well you can bet that Rapidshare will not be permitted.
