Bella – Piano Sonata in B-flat minor- I Allegro energico
First movement from the Piano Sonata in B-flat minor (1885) Ján Levoslav Bella (1843-1936) was an obscure Slovakian composer in the 19th-century recognized more for his religious music than instrumental works. He began writing masses as early as age 16 and often incorporated folk elements into his sacred music. He eventually showed an interest in the latest trends of Romanticism and established connections with Liszt, Brahms, and Richard Strauss. Bella left a modest output of chamber, orchestral, and solo piano music reminiscent of Schumann and Liszt.

Where did you get the record? I’d love to hear more
Liberace plays nice !!
…. and Reubke!
Daaaamn…. at 0:57 incredibly beautiful. This whole piece is magnificent.
I just found your Amazon review for this piece. Amazing stuff. Btw, the 1911 button is fun to watch and listen for a short while.
Bravo! Cheers from Brazil
Hexameron, where the hell did you get the score??
Hey thank’s Hexameron. Can you sag me where I can find these Notes. I have not find them an IMSLP.
I like this composer. Can you upload more piano pieces from this composer?
It’s always pleasant to unreveal a shadow composer on your channel!
But why don’t you add the words ‘bella’, ‘jan’, ’sonata’, ‘piano’ into the tags? They would help us find this music!
is this the only piano sonata Bella had composed?
This is a great sonata, Any chance of you uploading the other movements?
it’s funny remembered this piece and wanted to hear it again but couldn’t remember its name, then it comes up in ‘recommended for you’
Yes your channel did it for me and I’m infinitely grateful for it. Thank you so much!
I really like this peice..
I’d love to get my hands on the sheet music for this. Unfortunately, I can’t find it on the IMSLP (or the composer for that matter).
LOLLLLLLLLL
I was just the same way- if it wasn’t Beethoven, it wasn’t good enough. To my own recollection, I think it was Dvorak who helped me branch out, but now I love such a wide variety of music. Indeed, the music you post is both beautiful and fascinating; I had not heard of even half of these composers that, thanks to you, I now view with Great interest.
Lol – wrong time period, wrong music genre, wrong kind of composer… sorry you stumbled onto this.
But you’d do well to listen to it anyway. I mean, the second theme at 1:07 and its development at 5:28 is infinitely more lyrical and harmonically interesting than that famous number from “Twilight” you’re referring to…
This doesnt sound like Bella’s Lullaby. But since its the REAL Bellas lullaby then i think Carter Burwell changed it……
The reason for the name is somewhat sentimental. There was a time when I refused to listen to anything but Beethoven and Mozart. When I decided to take a gamble with Liszt, and not his more famous pieces, but the Hexameron variations, I was blown away.
From that point on, my tastes evolved exponentially: Brahms, Scriabin, Schoenberg, Finnissy. I guess my name honors a work that helped me broaden my exposure to music outside the mainstream, which I hope my channel does for other people.
My screen name refers to the famous “Hexameron” variations, created via collaboration of six early 19th-century piano virtuosos (Czerny, Herz, Pixis, Liszt, Thalberg, Chopin) and ultimately edited and polished by Liszt to be a self-contained concert work. You can find it on scriabinwasmydad’s channel. I will post it someday with score.
Yes, thank you! I am currently an undergraduate music major, planning on going to law. I was getting bored with classical music, and hence my law decision. But your posts have challenged that decision of mine.
And now my ignorance. What DOES your screen name mean?
sorry what i meant was that the music was anti-climatic and slow to get going again in some parts not the tempo was slow.
Hmm, I thought it was paced rather well. Until someone else records Bella’s piano music, we’ll have to be satisfied with this performance.
