How do you know which 3d glasses your 3d movie will require?

For instance, I got Coraline for Christmas, which I discovered was shot in the red/blue format and the shutter glasses I have do not work with it.

I have a Panasonic Viera 3d tv. Also, do I need to set my tv to 3d in order to watch? When I did that, it seemed to intensify the ghosting I saw on the screen. Will my 3d blue ray player only work on a 3d tv?
