In what ways did the Church sew the seeds for it’s downfall: Scientific, educational, religious oppression, the Inquisition, and the Crusades.
After Attila the Hun was dissuaded by a Pope Leo I in 452 to avoid sacking Rome, the church was in a powerful position to control Tome and most of western Europe. As the caesars declined, the church rose in power. They ended up filling part of the power vacuum left behind by the Roman empire during the Dark Ages. The Black Plague brought fear of God to the people, and the empire was in a greater position to manipulate and compel new followers to follow their leadership. The Pope endorsed Spanish Inquisition suppressed all over ideas and faiths as heresy, making the Papacy supreme in all matters. This was eventually curbed by Martin Luther’s teachings against the practices of Catholicism, spawning the Protestant Reformation and religious wars between Protestants and Catholics in France, Spain, and England, for starters. The excommunication of English under Henry the 8th is worth looking at strongly as a challenge to papal authority. After the Diet of Worms and Treaty of Nantes, policies changed and no longer was Catholicism the only version of Christian faith in Europe.
