not much
SOPA is not about censorship, but about intellectual property rights. Tell me, why should someone work hard to produce software or music or other art, if pirates can simply copy it and sell it without compensating the creator?
If the US did implement it, then it would end up shooting itself in the foot (again? further ?).
The method of implementation would be to break the worldwide DNS system.
OK, you could demand that US based servers did it, but not outside servers (services)
Making the Great FireWall of America, as it were, would also hardly sit well with the US PR machine statement of being the ‘land of the free’. nor the repeated criticisms of China etc. So politically, on a worldwide stage it makes no sense.
There are better ways of solving the problem that the invested monied business groups want a particular issue solved. They need to address that issue properly, not by taking what they perceive as a cheap and lazy target. It would be way too difficult to implement in practise, mainly due to the number of shared IP addresses etc. You end up with the merchant of Venice decision (you can have your result but not must not harm anything/anyone else)
Worth making a noise about the silly idea, but no it will not come to pass.
More importantly again,
The music “distribution” industry must move on, and accept that their old business model is dead, they need to re-invent it. When Digital watches came out, the swiss mechanical watch industry did not sue them, or demand laws to prevent ‘cheaper’ and ‘alternative’ devices from coming to market.
Once upon a time, there were performers and no recordings (OK, sheet music)
Then there was expensive recordings – which needed a distribution industry.
now we all have access to cheap recording machines,
sorry guys, the monopoly has been broken.
Same for professional photography,
Cheap camera’s mean that only the best and the few who need a genuine photography ’service’ remain in business. The rest who serviced the those without good camera’s or decent large photosheets have been displaced. (we can all use A4 and A3 colour print paper now)
Life is full of industries (from steel to those above) that have had their day,
Accept it, and move forward, not be a luddite and hold on to the past.
(ironic really, as luddites were against industry, and now industry is the one holding on !)
You can ask your friends to stop supporting copyright piracy websites anywhere in the world and to obtain the necessary permission to upload things that they did not personally create, especially if they are doing it for profit (which is what “piracy” is all about).
I am very sorry. On behalf of all the enraged citizens of the US I welcome that other nationalities disagree with this too. Petition your gov’t to speak out against SOPA. I know it may seem hard to go against the US but it is easier than it looks. If the international community condemns SOPA, it will only help the fight even more.
i look up bills on govtrack.us. I can also see the bill sponsors and voting record of senate and congress.
At least w/ SOPA King B Hussein Obama will not need to sit and wait w/ his internet kill switch. It will be done automatically. In addition please consider this;
FEMA camps and NDAA are the real thing. (just like an Orwellian Utopia) You’ll be gettin’ the eff out of dodge to avoid some kind of urban uprising because of a disaster or emergency and about 30 or 40 miles out of town traffic will stop. military stormtroopers will walk through stopped traffic and warn people to stay in their cars. when you get to the roadblock ahead you will be told to get out of your car (leave all of your belongings and your keys in the car and DO NOT bring any weapons) and wait in a holding area. You will then board a bus and go to one of their internment facilities where you will be in-processed. Hopefully you will not get to play any of their games (waterboarding, solitary confinement, etc)
As for the NDAA (just signed into law by Barack Hussein Obama) that will be used to authorize the whole thing, did you read the book or see the movie “1984″? that’s what it is. It allows any federal agency to declare an emergency and use the military forces to impose martial law. What they are doing in the mid east (door to door searches without warrants or any due process whatsoever) is only a rehearsal of what they have in store for us here. This is an article I wrote for another section.
Do the police need a warrant to search me or my property? Under aspects of the US Constitution, all persons are protected from unwarranted searches and any other form of arbitrary harassment. Unfortunately modern courts have misinterpreted the intentions of the founding fathers who authored the US Constitution and Bill of Rights to give the police the power at their discretion to use “probable cause.” Police should not be allowed to lawfully act on suspicions or whims, and any action against any person should be deemed unconstitutional. This also includes any electronic surveillance such as wiretaps, directional mics, etc. Of course under aspects of the “Patriot Act” they will claim that it is to protect us from terrorists. They also claim that states need to implement a REAL ID program so that sheeple can be digitally mapped for easy identification to once again… protect us from terrorists. Meanwhile, the southern border is wide open to basically let in whoever wants to come for whatever reason.
The fact is this; the enforcement of drug and firearm prohibition has allowed the government to turn this country into a pig powered police state and everyday it is becoming more and more like the USSR. You might like all of this “protection” but personally I prefer to protect myself. If you are the kind of person that wants to give up your liberty for security then please go somewhere else like China or N Korea
