If passed, SOPA will essentially give a government agency the power to demand that all U.S. internet service providers shut down access to any domain accused of providing access to copyrighted material without permission of the copyright owner.
While at face value, this doesn’t necessarily sound like a bad thing, the problem is that the bill is written in extremely vague language. YouTube or Facebook could be shut down under the same circumstances as The Pirate Bay.
Essentially, ANY website that contains user-generated content could potentially run afoul of SOPA and have their domain blocked in the U.S. It doesn’t even have to go through the courts… all someone has to do is file a complaint. It is then up to the site’s owner to appeal to the courts and attempt to get their site unblocked…. which might not be a huge problem for, say, Facebook, but smaller sites can’t afford teams of lawyers to go to court for them every time a complaint is made.
